"A letter to Prof. Kinsley"

DATE: Tuesday December 16, 2008
TIME: 12:20 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

Dear Prof. Kinsley:

I want to start by saying "THANK YOU" for being an extraordinary educator. It's being fun, gratifying and a wonderful learning experience having you as a teacher.

When I say fun, I'm referring to all those moments I had a laugh about something you said or mentioned, relating a situation that had happened you or one of my classmates.

When I say gratifying, I'm referring to every moment that you taught us something new. It's always gratifying to learn something new in life.

This has been a wonderful learning experience for me. From some college student perspective, and that's including me, English suppose to be kind of a boring and tiring learning experience, but somehow you managed to make it exciting to the point that I was looking forward and managed to be present in your English class every Tuesday night.

Thanks again Professor Kinsley. I wish you and your family the best during the coming holidays.

Yours Truly,

Victor Palma

Purchasing trhough the Internet.

DATE: Monday December 15, 2008
TIME: 11:05 a.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

Last night I made some Christmas shopping over the Internet. I think the only reason I use this method of purchasing is because they make it so convenient to the point that you can even do it in your pajamas. I believe a computer is the best invention of human kind, and even better the invention of Internet. We are able to do just about anything when it comes to Internet from finding valuable information up to buying whatever you desire from the commodity of your home.

I've doing must of my Christmas shopping through the Internet for the past 3 years. I guess because nobody wants to deal with those crowded malls trying to find parking, bumping to one another, or what it's worse those long lines at the checkout register. One of the things we have to be very careful about purchasing through the Internet is identity theft.

Last week, I was called by one of my creditors and asked me if I had purchase gas over in North Carolina to what I answer immediately with a rotunding "NO". He told me he was going to cancel my account and opened a new account right there at that moment. I got my new card back, but I still keep doing the same with my Christmas shopping and that is purchasing over the Internet. I guess we just have to be a little more careful. I usually do my shopping with the most known stores such as Macy's, Best Buy, and Circuit City, just to name some of them.

One Down......One More to Go!

DATE: Sunday December 14, 2008
TIME: 12:05 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

Yesterday, I finished my Math 032 class for this semester. I believed I got an "A", but I still have my English 112 class final next Tuesday. Although, I finished my math class, I had the chance to start my next math class which is Math o92.

I was at the point of almost finishing this class, all I have to do is take the final exam for this math class. I went to my final math class yesterday with one and one goal only set on my mind, and that was to finished both classes in one session only. But I couldn't start my final exam because next to me there was a student that compared to my age was a like a kid to me that started talking with the guy next to him without stopping.

I think they were trying to cheat on one of the test, but I think the teacher noticed and warned them about cheating. Anyway, that was very disturbing and could not concentrate so I could take my math final exam. Time ran out and I was very disappointed because I couldn't finished my last test on math.

Oh well, goal not achieved because of two irresponsible kids... maybe next time. I don't like to use headphones, but I think I'm going to purchase one of those mp3's or an IPod for my next math class. I'm very serious about my education and I'll do whatever it takes to achieve my goals and therefore succeed.

Close Encounter of the First Kind: Personal Experience.

DATE: Saturday December 13, 2008
TIME: 10:10 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

I came across a close encounter of the first kind back in the summer of 2002. I had just moved to my new apartment together with my younger brother and my mother located in Sunnyside, Queens.

It happened around 11:20 on the night of July 4th. I was in the process of turning the air conditioner off and closing the window curtains in the living room so I could go to sleep. I happened to notice a full moon while fixing the curtains. Something told me to look again, and there it was, right below the moon there was a disk shaped object floating on the same spot without moving.

I stepped away from the window and turned off all the lights. I woke up my mother and my brother and showed them what I had just discovered. They knew I was serious about it because I hate to lie. We were picking through the window when my brother discovered another one, and then my mother yelled, “there’s another one”; “quiet” I whispered.

There were a total of six forming some type of triangle. We noticed that the longer you kept looking at them, gave us the impression that they were getting closer and closer to us. I went to check through the back window and there I saw another one. There was a plane flying close to the hovering UFO.

I closed the curtains and my mother made us pray for about 10 minutes. When we finished praying I went back to the window and they were gone. They spaceships were gray, and you could see the reflection of the moon on them.

The End is Near!

DATE: Friday December 12, 2008
TIME: 6:55 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

Please don't panic! I'm not talking about the world. I'm just talking about my English 112 class. One of the requirements for this course, was the creation of this blog were I was supposed to write about a different topic from October 28th until the end of it, December 16th.

I'm glad is going to be over in a way, simply because I don't have to go crazy trying to think of a topic that I could write about. I titled this piece "The end is near" because we are 6 days away for this class to be over.

I have my final exam this coming Tuesday, but I have to finish a research paper on which is due the same day. I am almost finish with my writing piece, I titled it "UFOs: We are not alone."

There is a lot of people out there that truly believe that there is life in another planet besides planet Earth. I include myself in this group. Tomorrow I will talk about my encounter of the first kind with a UFO. I'm about to have my dinner, so I see you ("whoever is out there") tomorrow.

Grading Our Own Teachers!

DATE: Thursday December 11, 2008
TIME: 12:45 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

Today I had a difficult task and that is give an evaluation for the teachers I had on session A at Devry College. During this session I took English 112, which is the guilty party why I'm writing this blog, and Math 032. I've been always a fair man and I think I gave a fair evaluation to each of the teachers I had for this almost ending session.

I believe I was put by the admission counselor by mistake in my English 112 class. Probably that's the reason why this class wasn't too hard for me. In my prior English class experience, I believe, I had a better text book. It provided more class interaction.

I enjoy more class activity, than online activity because we get to interact more with my classmates and in a way, get to know each other better. Anyway, I enjoyed Prof. Kinsley teaching because she has a tremendous sense of humor.

On the other hand, my Math 032 was in the way one of my worse classes ever. First at all, I never took an online class before and made it difficult for me. Even though, we have to go to the campus every Saturday, we had to spend all 8 hours in front of the computer and no teaching was implemented.

I think math is a subject that should be taught in a whiteboard. Anyway, I think Prof. Mohamed is a wonderful teacher and hope to learn more from him during the following semesters.

Why People Lie?

DATE: Wednesday December 10, 2008
TIME: 1:40 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

I was born a Catholic. Every since I was a kid, my mother always taught my two brothers, my sister, and I to always tell the truth. As a Catholic, I was always reminded of the 10 Commandments. According to the bible, the 9th Commandment states that "thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour." Lying is the most direct offense against the truth.

In last night's English class, several of my classmates were asked to read their essays about "Lies and Its Classifications". Most of them were good pieces of work and some of them were in a way funny. But then the professor started asking everybody in class about our recent lies. I swear, I couldn't believe what most of them were saying.

Thank god she didn't asked me because I wouldn't know what to tell her. I know in a way, I'm kind of all fashioned......but were did our morals go? What about are values as human beings, where did they go? Some of the answers were upsetting to me that is not even worth mentioning. I know sometimes we tell a white lie, but that's only to protect or to save from danger one of our love ones.

When I was growing up, I was taught to always tell the truth and to be honest with others. The practice of goodness is accompanied by spontaneous spiritual joy and moral beauty. I truthfully believe that honesty is the best policy.

Untitled!

DATE: Tuesday December 9, 2008
TIME: 10:45 a.m
PLACE: Home Computer

I wanted to title this piece of writing "untitled" just because like in several ocassions before, I don't have a topic to write about. I started by putting on instrumental music in my computer, so it could set my mood about finding something to write about.

The song playing right now is from Alex Acosta, a musician from Ecuador. The music he plays is plain folklore from my country and the countries among The Andes such as Bolivia and Peru. He plays music using his pan flute accompanied by a guitar and other musical instruments. I met Alex Acosta two years ago while doing some shopping at a local mall back in my hometown Portoviejo. There he was playing his music by the entrance of the mall.

I was going to buy some souvenirs to bring back to the States, but as soon as I started to listen to his music, my legs drove me straight to him. He had four different Cd's that he had recorded and I bought them all. He stop the music came to me and thanked me for supporting our typical Ecuadorean music. I told him I was excited and proud to meet him, and ask him to autograph all four Cd's I had bought.

He was happy that his music was going out of the country because somehow he knew I wasn't residing in Ecuador. I thanked him and left. I continued with my shopping and when I was leaving I heard Acosta's playing his music, somehow he saw me leaving and raised his hand to say goodbye while playing his pan flute, and then I raised mine.

Writing vs. Speaking

DATE: Monday December 8, 2008

TIME: 12:00 p.m.

PLACE: Home Computer

Writing is a much more difficult task than speaking. When we speak, besides our own voice, we use body language to add to our meaning. In a conversation, we are able to explain ourselves, and by doing so, we insure that the listener is following what we say; we can also provide responses to questions asked if something needs to be clarified.

We don’t have this same advantage when we write simply because we have to be concise and very clear in making our point and for that we only have one chance. When we talk, people don’t always challenge you to give reasons for your statements when making assertions. When talking to people, they don’t always question what you say only because they may not want to put you in a spot.

On the other hand, people that read your writing don’t always agree with you. Therefore, if you want people to understand your writing and communicate with them in an effective manner, you must support your thoughts and ideas with enough details and evidences to prove your point of view.

Frustration is OVER.

DATE: Saturday December 6, 2008
TIME: 6:20 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

Today I went to school with one thing on mind, and that was to pass the second test in my Math 092 class. All this week I was feeling frustrated because this was to me one of the most difficult test so far.

Nothing usually brings me down, but this stupid test was driving me crazy. I had taken a practice test and got a 46, I panic and took another test, revising of course, what I did wrong in that test. When I took another practice test I got 86, I was relief now.

I still needed help so I could score higher in my math test so I studied until 12 midnight last night. It was worth it because I learned things I couldn't understand before. Once I got to school on the following morning I took a deep breath and started taking my math test.

I took my time with it and once I finished, I scored 100 in my test. I was aiming for 90, but I guess that 100 is better than 90. My frustration was over then. I hope to finished this math class by the end of session A at DeVry.

I only have one more class and that will be the end of it. I have to take one more test on chapter 12 and then take the final exam. I'll keep my finger crossed.

Oscar De La Hoya v. Manny Pacquiao: Fight of the Year!

DATE: Sunday December 7, 2008
TIME: 11:10 a.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

I was very excited Saturday night because I was going to watch the boxing match of the year. Oscar de la Hoya was fighting Manny Pacquiao. I always admired Oscar de la Hoya, not only because he is a great fighter, but because he is a great humanitarian.

He had some controversial fights in the past like the one he fought against Trinidad, I believe de la Hoya won that fight. He has won many fights against some of the best boxing fighters such as Shane Mosley, Marquez, and Cesar Chavez, just to name some of them. But last night was his most challenging fight because he was fighting against the best pound per pound in boxing which was Manny Paqcuiao.

This was a fight that nobody that enjoy boxing as a sport will miss. I had to pay almost $55 dollars but it was worth it. I didn't wanted to miss any second of the fight, not even to go use the bathroom, that how exciting the fight was. I was hoping de la Hoya defeated Pacquiao because he is retiring after this fight he had last night.

Too bad the fight was over on the eighth round because I wanted to watch more of the fight. I think this man born in Filippines, is the best pound per pound nowadays. He is too fast and too strong to be defeated. I don't think there's a contender out there than is able to defeat him.

Frustration is a Rare Disease On Me.

DATE: Friday December 5, 2008
TIME: 11:30 a.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

I've been taking Math 032 class on campus, but it's like taking it online because all you do is sit in front of a computer all day long. This course, as I said it before, it's better if we have an actual teacher to show us all the corresponding steps of math. I finished this course in four weeks, since this session "A" takes eight weeks, I had to start on my following math class which is Math 092.

I finished chapter 10 with no problems at all, but every since I started chapter 11 I'm getting headache after headache because of the problems I'm having trying to understand all this material based on linear inequalities. I was hoping to finished this class by next week because it's the date when this session ends.

I hardly ever feel frustrated about something. Usually I'm like a therapist whenever my friends are in trouble and want help or just a piece of advise. It gratifying to make people feel good about themselves, but in this occasion who's going to help me?

I guess I have to spend one week for the teacher to show me or to teach me about this chapter I'm having problems with. I'm going to start chapter eleven all over again today, I'm even going to cancel my appoint with my chiropractor that was scheduled for 3:00 p.m. later on.

New Assignment about Lies.

DATE: Thursday December 4, 2008
TIME: 9:15 a.m
PLACE: Home Computer

We were assigned, in my English 112 class, an essay about lie and its categories. No, it doesn't refer to the Long Island Expressway (LIE) ha, ha, ha.

Lie also called prevarication, is a type of deception in the form of an untruthful statement, especially with the intention to deceive others. Sometimes we lie to maintain a secret or a reputation.

Particularly speaking, every since I was a kid, my mother always taught us not to lie and to always tell the truth. Anyway, even if we wanted to lie to my mother, just by looking deep into our eyes she would know we were lying. I believe I developed the same, I should call it "trick" or whatever it is, from mom.

Just by looking into someones eyes I could tell whether he or she is telling me the truth or is just a plain lie. Of course, I have to know that person for quite a while in order for me to do that. I believe that honesty is the best policy, and makes the world a better place to live.

I did say in the past, one, or two so called "white lies" just to help one of my relatives or friends and would tell a white lie now or whenever any of my love ones need me to. When I say white lies I'm referring to untold truth just to save someone we like to avoid getting into trouble.

My First Online Class.

DATE: Wednesday December 3, 2008
TIME: 11:50 a.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

Last night I had my first experience on taking an online class. It was for English 112, the course I'm taking currently at DeVry's college. We usually take this class at the campus located in Long Island City.

The reason why we had to take this online class was because the teacher couldn't make to class and had to do it online from her house. It was in a way exciting because we didn't have to be in class, but we had to be using a computer either at the college's lab or at the tranquility of our homes.

Some of us make it to the lab, but most of my classmates stood home and took the class in the commodity of their homes. I wish though, that the professor used all the resources that an online course provides. All we did was chat.

I thought this experience was going to be a little more exciting, but it wasn't. I hope that the very next time we have this type of experiences, it will at least be more productive.

Be Aware of Scams.

DATE: Tuesday December 2, 2008
TIME: 12:25 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

My mom commented me a few days ago about someone calling about a family member that was stuck in Mexico's border to come to USA and that she needed to send the money for the "coyote" (man usually from Mexico that helps a person to cross the border illegally) to help the family member to cross the border.

She was a little scared and also confused (she's got a great heart). I told her first of all we are not Mexicans (we are Ecuadorians), second of all we don't have any family members that are coming to USA, third, if we had someone from our family that wants to come here, they would travel as tourists because we are legal aliens in this country. Besides most of all even became American Citizens. I told my mother to forget about the subject that it must to be some kind of scam; some idiot trying to get money from you, I told mom. I told her if that person happen to call again to tell him, because it was a man who called the first time, that you are going to report him to the local authorities, to what she agreed.

Yesterday, since I'm currently unemployed, he called again and I answered the phone. He ask for mom, and I told him that she was working, that I was her son and also asked him for his name. He said his name was José and then he asked me about money, so he can bring my family member to USA soil safely; I asked for his address and he replied that he didn't have any address here in USA, and also asked me why would I want his address, I replied to report it to the police.

He hesitated for a minute and found out that I realized it was an scam and told me "f.... the police and f... your mother", to what I replied "the same to you" and then I yelled "imbecile", and then he hanged up. Bad guys go around trying to get Innocent people's money, so please try to be careful and pay close attention, especially with your elderly relatives or friends.

What's the use!

DATE: Monday December 1, 2008
TIME: 1:10 p.m.
PLACE: Home Computer

I created this blog a little over a month now because is a requirement for my English 112 class at DeVry College. This means I wrote more that 30 blogs already. Thirty-five including this one I'm writing about now.

I still don't see what's the use of it. I see no comments from the teacher or anybody else. Every day I wake up thinking about a subject so I could meet this assignment requirement. And every day is the same thing, I don't know what to write about. I'm running out of subjects or topics of what to write.

Anyway, my only relief is that we are three weeks away to finish this tormenting class. I say tormenting because writing has been my weakest subject while in school. I can't wait for this class to be over, not because I don't like the teacher, but because I never enjoyed writing.

The only time I enjoy writing is when there is a special occasion for one of my love ones and I have to write something on a card whether is a birthday, wedding or any other special occasion because what I write comes from deep inside my heart. They know I mean every word I wrote down.
